Sujatha College is another big school with about 4000 girls in the primary and secondary section. There were numerous pen friendships carried out in English, and in 2012, a German girl, grade 12, student of Werner Heisenberg Gymnasium in Neuwied, even visited her Srilankan pen friend and was invited to stay in her family for two weeks.
Rohana Special School is a school for deaf students and those who have hearing defects, blind or partially sighted students or children with Down’s syndrome.
This school impressed us in a particular way: well organized, clean and tidy, well-trained teachers coping with the students’ handicaps in a special and affectionate way. Founded in 1963, now there are about 120 children, half of them living in the hostel. When we first visited this school, we noticed the lack of rooms, lessons took even place on stair landings, and there was no room for meetings or assemblies.
Since summer 2010 we have been in contact with this school for boys and girls, situated on the premises of Mantinda Temple School for boys. In younger classes there is coeducation, particularly in the primary section. ( about 2000 students altogether)
In contrast to renowned colleges like Rahula and Sujatha, the catchment area of Anura Vidyalaya is an economically needy one. Founded in 1956, this school has only got modest buildings and poor school equipment. That was the reason for our association to start an immediate two-footed take-off and lend a helping hand.
This College was the first one where our Friendship Association started work. After finishing the hostel building for 25 boys, the hostel could be extended with two more floors because of generous donations by the state government of Rhineland Palatinate and the help-programme “HELFT UNS LEBEN ( = help us to live) of our local newspaper “Rheinzeitung”. The opening ceremony took place in January 2007. About 4.500 boys go to Rahula College, a school with an excellent reputation that has produced many clever young men.
