More useful donations for Anura College and Rohana Special School!
Finally, six new white boards have arrived at Anura College and can replace the wooden
chipboards that are difficult to handle and to write on with chalk.
It is much easier to write and draw on these white boards; it is easier for the students to read, easier to clean and a real advantage for teachers and students. Big thanks to our Srilankan coordinator, Mr. Ruwan Abegunewardene, who helped with shopping, transport and fixing.
The money for these boards was donated by students of Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium, Neuwied. On one day all students of grade 8
looked for a job and worked in shops, factories, offices, hospitals, etc. The total sum of money that was earned on that day was given to Neuwied-Matara-Friendship-Association and was enough to pay for these whiteboards. Thank you all, students and teacher, Mr. Carsten Neuhaus who organized this day!
On the occasion of his birthday, Mr. Martin Klein, did not want any presents when inviting his guests to his party, but he wanted them to donate some money for Anura College and Rohana Special School. Some time ago, we reported
about the new table tennis table and rackets at Anura College (see ) and badminton equipment for Rohana Special School. In September a new photocopy machine was an additional donation for Rohana School Office. It has become a very useful device and helps teachers and students.
Thanks a lot, all those who contributed to these donations that mean another piece of the important puzzle of good school education.
Informative „godparents‘ day“ spiced with impulses for more continuity
Yesterday, October 22nd, the Board members of Neuwied-Matara-Friendship-Association came together to welcome about twenty “godparents” at Weinhaus Adams in Neuwied to give them details and news about the origin (tsunami, December 26th, 2004), start of help and different activities (January 2005) and development of projects at schools in Matara (till today and still going on). President, Mr. Bernd Mertgen, welcomed sponsors and other guests, among them the Princess Sophie of Neuwied, protectress of the new preschool at Anura College (PSPS = Princess-Sophie-Pre-School). „Godparents‘ Day“ in Neuwied
Neuwied-Matara Friendship Association kindly invites all sponsors (supporting a child in Matara and granting a scholarship) and those who want to join in supporting a child, to meet on Saturday, October 22nd 2016, at
at 2.30 p.m. Please, announce your coming via email:
Some weeks ago, our Vice president, Mrs. Edeltrud Pinger, came back from her 14th journey to Sri Lanka. She will report about her activities and about meeting scholarship students and their families. Photographs will accompany her report and demonstrate that the association’s work bears fruit and that a lot of children and families can benefit from those scholarships. Much more can and should be done.
The board members are looking forward to welcoming you and happily accepting your commitment and support.
Bohome istuti = Thanks a lot.
Two weeks of intensive work in Matara, Sri Lanka – Diary
Dear friends,
Although promised in the previous article, it was not possible for our vice president, Edeltrud Pinger, to report regularly during the past two weeks because of her numerous daily activities and her arduous daily schedules. On the social platform ‘Facebook’ this can be done more easily, and texts and pictures can be posted quickly. That is the reason why all those entries have been collected and will be published here and now. A lot of photographs have been inserted meanwhile in the German text to illustrate most of the exciting and interesting events. Please, enjoy reading and looking at the pictures in the German version.
September 1st, 2016
Arrival in time at 4.40 a.m. I can fetch my suitcase, change Euro to Rupees and get into a small van whose driver has to stop at two other hotels before he drops me at Mirissa. The new Highway really saves a lot of time, and I can even get a breakfast when we arrive at the hotel. The waiters recognize Mrs. Pinger and remember that she likes a fresh mixed fruit juice with fried eggs on toast and grilled tomato. Good start, isn’t it? (more…)
Final preparation for take-off to Colombo
Five more days before the aircraft of Srilankan Airline takes off in Frankfurt and goes to Colombo. Ten hours – direct flight. Let’s hope that the transfer Colombo-Mirissa is well organized and takes our vice president, Mrs. Edeltrud Pinger, to the south coast. There is the new highway now, which means that it takes only less than three hours to go there instead of 5 ½ hours in former times. Arrival at the hotel will be early in the morning, nearly four hours ahead of Germany where people will still be fast asleep. This first day might be used to prepare and plan first items. Getting used to the humid and hot climate can’t be so difficult after those really last hot days in the area of Neuwied-Germany. No problem! (more…)
Lots of helpful donations in the run-up to the next journey
Two and a half weeks to go, and our vice president Edeltrud Pinger will be again on her way to Sri Lanka, her 14th journey to the island. Lots of things must be prepared and considered. Little gifts and letters for scholarship students are handed over to her, and banks and companies are kindly asked to donate some objects,…and, indeed, they don’t splash out and generously donate little presents that can be given to students, teachers, waiters and room-boys. They have not yet stopped enjoying colourful and nicely designed pens or other stationary and office supplies. (more…)
Cleanliness first – finishing off with garbage problem
School premises of Anura College and Manthinda Temple School are the spot where more than 1000 students, numerous teachers and employees spend most of their day time. They should feel good there, and that is possible when classrooms, office rooms, corridors and school yards are kept clean and in good condition. You certainly can do that by carrying out these duties in turns, collecting rubbish and filling it in baskets and bags and storing everything in a safe place until it is removed by the urban service.
Maybe, it is a typical German virtue when our friendship association decides building a garbage-shed where filled bags can be kept and locked. It’s situated quite near a gate leading to the road where the waste collection service can get in. We provided more waste bins and bags, and we really hope that teachers and prefects can convince their colleagues and students that keeping their area clean makes sense, and that this will be an advantage for the whole school community. Life goes on at Anura Vidyalaya and Manthinda Temple School
The second school term is running at full speed, and the young students at the new Princess-Sophie-Preschool do their studies with great ambition, they sing, draw pictures, do some handicraft. Our member, Elke Emmerich, visited this place several times during her stay at Koggala (see entry of June 18th) and sent us the pictures that we publish here. (more…)

Name of new Anura-Preschool intensified by a beautiful signboard
There is a new sign
board that decorates Anura preschool now! Our members Elke and Johannes Emmerich visited Anura Vidyalaya and had the signboard fixed by the helping hand of a monk of Manthinda Temple School who you would normally associate with meditation and prayers. There is an extra-plus on this colourful wall now, and as it was fixed on a Friday after school, we are curious to know who of the young preschool students will first notice the enriching change on Monday morning.
Our friendship-association members met some
scholarship children and their mothers and handed over letters and little presents from their sponsors in Germany. Eshan, Thishmi and Dilshan were extremely happy about this meeting and will certainly write a thankful answer to them soon. Elke and her father were given a friendly and hearty welcome by the teachers Mrs. Tekla and Mr. Wasantha and accepted with great pleasure their invitation for tea.
