Christmas time in Germany – End of the school year in Sri Lanka

With regard to Buddhist religion in Sri Lanka you would not expect Christmas atmosphere, Christmas trees, stars or the baby-child Jesus in the manger…..

But – there are lots of Christmas cards we receive in those days from the island in the Indian Ocean. Most of Sri Lanka’s inhabitants are

Buddhists, but there are also Muslims, Hindus and quite a lot of Christians, going back to the Portuguese influence some centuries ago.

That is why there are Christmas cards, Christmas decoration, stars and snow-covered Christmas trees (in pictures at least) that can never

be discovered in reality in this country. But even for us in Germany, it has become difficult during the last years to enjoy “White Christmas”.

In Sri Lanka, it is the end of the school year. Students, after receiving their final school reports of the last year, and teachers, are on holidays and will face the new school year 2017 starting on January 2nd  2017.

With this message here, we want to send Christmas greetings and best wishes for the new year to all members of our Neuwied-Matara-Friendship-Association, to sponsors and our scholarship-children’s German godparents, to all our friends, students and teachers in Sri Lanka. We wish peace and happiness, good health and well-being to the families and the country.

Hope to see you again on January 19th 2017!
